We geven enkele Engelstalige sites door. Het grootste gedeelte van het Russische leger dat aan de westelijke Russische grens stond in 1812 dekte de route naar Sint Petersburg af. Op 23 juli 1812 kreeg de Russische legerleider Wittgenstein de opdracht de weg naar Sint Petersburg te beschermen.

It is true that St. Petersburg was then the current political capitol of Russia, but Moscow was still the most populated city there and had the further presitge of being the traditional home of the Czars and the spiritual capitol of Russia which housed the Russian Orthodox church where the Czars gained their divine right to rule. Had Alexander lost and ceded Moscow to Napoleon with a formal surrender, it would've been said that he had turned his back on God, his divine right to rule, and the people of Russia in favor of the relatively mild climes of Petersburg (all while the rest of Russia suffered).
